Using the Examples

This section of the web site presents research into auditory phenomena. Here you will find discussions and example circuits that demonstrate various facets of how our minds perceive sound and music.

Analog Box 2 is a useful tool for this as it presents a set of sound and control modules that may be precisely configured to the specifications needed for serious experimentation.

The first scientist who has offered to show the capabilities of ABox in this respect is Leon van Noorden. His doctoral dissertation, "Temporal Coherence in the Perception of Tone Sequences", demonstrated a number phenomena with examples that are still used in introductory university classes on perception.

Leon has offered to serve in the coming period as the scientific editor of this part of the site. The intention is to gradually expand these series of demonstrations and provide a publicly available set of hands-on examples. It is our hope that interested scientists, students and artists will also wish to contribute demonstrations of auditory phenomena and demonstration circuits in an effort to promote communication and advance the field in general.
Correspondence in regards to using Analog Box 2 for audio research can be directed to either Leon van Noorden or Andy J Turner

Temporal Coherence
Leon van Noorden

Leon's doctoral thesis contained a gramophone record demonstrating some of the auditory phenomena he had studied. This series of 11 pages duplicates the examples and allows you to explore by changing parameters of the stimuli.

Using the Examples

To use the example circuits, you will need to have ABox2 on your PC. If you have not already done so, download it from here, unzip it, then run it at least once to install it.

To access the examples, simply click on the link at the top of the article. Your web browser will ask if you want to download the circuit to your hard-drive, or open it right now. If you choose to download to your hard-drive you will have to tell your browser where to store, then tell ABox where to get it. Or you can save a step and open the circuit directly.

If you are new to ABox2 and wish to know more about it, please feel free to explore the rest of this web-site. You will find all of the help files on-line, some tutorials, a library of miscellaneous modules and over 100 example circuits demonstrating ABox as a sound-design and generative music application.
